diverse career that can help you travel the world, change the future and learn
for the rest of your working life. Tips like these might point you in the right
direction for beginning your career:
·
Choose a
Field
Your career as a professor will vary dramatically based
on your field. A professor in Counselor Education will lead a much different
life than a professor in Paleontology, for example, so you need to know what it
is you want to teach. Select something you’re passionate about, that you can
read/speak endlessly about, and you’ll have a better chance of loving your
career for life.
·
Earn Your
Bachelor’s Degree
Dr. Aptekar graduated from Wayne State University with his
Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology and Special Education to prepare for
his career. Once you know what field you’d like to specialize in, you can begin
looking at ideal Bachelor’s degrees for the industry and sign up to take your
first step.
·
Go to
Graduate School
After earning his Bachelor’s, Dr. Aptekar graduated with
a Ph.D. in Educational Psychology from the University of Michigan. He then completed
his Post-Doctoral Residency in Clinical Psychology. Attending graduate school
and a post-doctoral residency is your next step, and you should hopefully have
a heading once you’ve earned your first degree and spent time considering your
career in teaching.
·
Seek
Experience
Finally, before you begin teaching as a professor, you’ll
want to seek experience with various employment opportunities and internships.
This will help you expand your network of references and your understanding of
your area of expertise before you’re standing at the head of your own
classroom.
