Dr. Lewis Aptekar: Ways to Make the World a Better Place
Dr. Lewis Aptekar was a Professor in Counselor Education at San
José State University’s Connie L. Lurie College of Education until 2016, when
he entered retirement. Throughout his career, he’s maintained an excellent
reputation for compassion, kindness and humanitarian drive, and he continues to
do so today. For decades, he’s worked to make the world a better place and to
encourage others to do the same, and his published works display this passion
in raw detail time and time again.
If you want to join Dr. Lewis Aptekar in making the world a
better place, consider reading “In the Lion's Mouth: Hope and Heartbreak in
Humanitarian Assistance” (2010) for a deeper look at his efforts. Meanwhile,
simple actions like these can help you better the world in meaningful ways:
·
Donate
Clean Water
Many people around the world live every day without
clean water to drink. There’s a drought epidemic underway, and donating clean
water to those in need is an excellent way to give back. Look for organizations
and charities working to end this epidemic, make donations and get involved
with volunteer work, if possible. Along the same line, conserve water by taking
shorter showers, turning off the faucet when it isn’t in use and otherwise
limiting your usage.
·
Volunteer
at Schools and Youth Programs
School children need loving support so they can learn,
grow and develop to become tomorrow’s leaders. Whatever age of children you
enjoy working with, explore opportunities in your area to volunteer with them
at schools and youth programs. From tutoring and mentoring to leading an after
school youth program on your own, every effort to help children in your
community and around the world makes the world a better place.
·
Get
Friends Involved
If you find a volunteer opportunity that you love, or a
charity you want to support more, get your friends involved. Ask them to
volunteer with you, give what they can and otherwise spread the word. You might
invite a friend to travel to another country with you to help during a time of
crisis, or you might simply ask them to do a charity walk around your
neighborhood. Whatever the case, involving others spreads the spirit of
compassion and further improves the world.
