SJSU Professor Lewis Aptekar

Lewis Aptekar, PhD, served as a Professor in Counselor Education at San José State University’s Connie L. Lurie College of Education until he retired in 2016. He has decades of experience and served as a Senior Fulbright Lecturer for the University of Swaziland’s Department of Psychology between 1995 and 1996. Lewis Aptekar , also visited the Universidad de Santo Tomas in Bogota, Colombia, as a Fulbright Scholar between 1983 and 1984, and he continues to enjoy Fulbright Senior Specialist Program membership.

Lewis Aptekar, PhD, is a retired Professor in Counselor Education who authored and coauthored multiple books, book chapters and scientific papers on his areas of expertise. A couple of his biggest accomplishments include the 2013 book, “Street Children and Homeless Youth: A Cross-Cultural Perspective,” and the 2010 book, “In the Lion's Mouth: Hope and Heartbreak in Humanitarian Assistance.” Today, Dr. Lewis  Aptekar spends much of his time relaxing with his family, riding horses and writing fiction.

Lewis Aptekar is recently retired from academia, having wrapped up his tenure as Professor of Counselor Education within the San Jose State University Lurie College of Education in 2016.  Over the course of his career, Aptekar has earned considerable recognition and respect from numerous colleagues, organizations and members of the academic community; recognition that has, in turn, earned him countless invitations to lecture, speak, and participate in events in the United States and around the world.
